Ursar

Ursar:  Ursar is the name of the system containing Bleakside, the Barrens, the Rift, and Core.  Explorers from Ursar have failed in finding other systems however the Vhan are the staple in the theory of other systems.

Bleakside:  Stretching across the eastern most part of the islands is Bleakside.  Devoid of nearly all government might is right.  Bleakside is inhabited mainly by pirates, mercenaries, and other dark figures.  The largest island in the Bleakside chain is Pit.  Pit is run mostly by Pirates.  They run the street with their crews and control the goods coming in and out of Pit.  To the south of pit are the institutions.  To the north are small towns trying to make a living while being constantly harassed by pirates.  This has made them some of the toughest people you will ever meet.  they are more commonly known as Vhans.

The Institutions:  The term The Institutions refers to the massive gangs that reside on their private islands south of Pit.  United by the Three Brothers the gangs have a shaky allegiance with one another, making them one of the most potent and ominous forces in Ursar.  Commonly known as The Family these organized gangs specialize in corruption, bribery, blackmail, and other forms of behind the scenes rule.  However they are not afraid to show their military might with a fleet of some of the most powerful ships in Ursar.  This feared fleet and its crews are know as Big Daddy.  Using both weaponry and behind the scenes blackmail The Family  has at least some power in every society in Ursar.

Vhans:  Not much is known about Vhans.  It is thought that they came from another system unknown to the inhabitants of Ursar.  They keep to themselves, living on the northern islands of Bleakside.  Generally keeping to themselves, the Vhans have only a few ships that they use for minor protection.  However Vhans have been known to be fiercely territorial and will protect their land and their families at all costs, Vhans are some of the most fearsome warriors in Ursar.

Steelgrove:  Steelgrove is the hulking metallic monstrosity that is the capital city of Bleakside.  It lies perched on an overhang on the largest island in the Bleakside chain; Pit.  A dirty bronze in the sunlight the city looks like ragged fingernail of a robot rising from the depths of the island.  Tall metal buildings are packed together leaving little room in the streets for pedestrians.  The streets are a dirty affair with trash pushed to the side by the throngs of people.  Homeless and crippled lie on the side watching the world pass by.  Rats run across the many cables holding this city together.  At the drop off are the docks. Hanging out over oblivion are the creaking walkways leading out to the cradles.  The cradles hold ships at dock.  One can hardly see their original shape the cradles have been patched over so many times.  Ships sit resting on a bed of interwoven cables, supporting their great weight.  People bustle back and forth on the walk ways, taking goods from their last voyage to sell within the city.  Others are taking goods aboard for transport or in preparation for their next journey into the Barrens or beyond.

The Barrens:  The Barrens are a mass of islands to the west of Bleakside but before the Rift.  The Barrens counter to what its name implies is actually a jungle island chain.  Each island packed with flora and fauna.  From afar the Barrens appear to be a beautiful abstract piece of a thousand pieces of green.  But once you step onto an island you see the darkness beneath the trees.  Unknown creatures lurk beneath the trees, hungry and looking for their next meal.  It is also rumored that tribes of intelligent creatures reside in the Barrens but very few have seen them and returned.  In the center of the Barrens lies a dormant volcano named Mount Rend.  As a result of its dormancy vegetation has begun to creep up this silent beast.  Nobody can recall ever seeing activity from Mount Rend and as of now it sits, a dark scar atop a lush green landscape.  It is rumored that in the depths of this volcano the wyrms live, close to nature’s own form of flaming breath.

Wyrms:  The wyrm is a massive beast, its might unparalleled.  Its head alone is nearly the size of a house.  Its green slender body stretches the length of four airships and is lined with nasty spines.  Along both sides of its body are emerald sails made from flesh and bone.  It twists and glides through the air, riding drafts coming off the floating islands.  It opens it’s caping maw, large enough to swallow five men easily in one bite. A jet of hellfire rockets into the sky, hot enough to melt metal and burn ships.  Only one wyrm has ever been seen so it is unknown as to whether or not there are more hidden in Mount Rend.

The Rift:  The Rift is a true wasteland.  Composed of a tightly packed chain of extremely small islands the Rift sits uninhabited between the Barrens and Core.  The islands are so packed that it is hazardous to attempt crossing through.  Thus the Rift serves as a first line of defense for the Core from Bleakside attacks.  So far explorations have not found signs of life within the Rift, however nobody has entered the center of the Rift as it would be too dangerous.

Core:  Core is the capital city of the Alliance.  Core used to be the most western chain in the Ursar system however once the treaty was set in place all the islands were brought together to make Core.  Using their vast fleets of ships they pulled all of the islands into one forming Core.  Using immense cables and massive chains Core was stitched together and is now by far the largest island in Ursar.

The Alliance:  Originally the western chain was always at war.  Peace was finally met when Bleakside launched a massive attack on the western chain.  Together the western chain could barely fend off the pirates of Bleakside along with the Big Brothers.  Seeing the sorry state of their defense and knowing that they could not survive another onslaught the western chain was forced to form an alliance with one another.

July 9th Opening Prompt

Fallout New Vegas is one of the most immersive games ever created.  Alone in post-apocalyptic world you set out to find the men who tried to kill you.  Along the way you meet all types of people, from robotic dogs to radiation mutants.  But what makes this game so good that you can sink hours into just exploring the new world in all it’s radiated glory?

The first aspect is well designed little hooks.  New Vegas and the surrounding area is riddled with small towns that hint at what life was like before the war.  At first you don’t really know these little hints are there but after a while you start to see them and thats when you get hooked.  You start going through every deserted town you can find looking for tapes, little audio shorts that are bits of recordings from old radio shows and various other forms of media.  Part of the genius is that these pieces are fascinating is that it gets the player hooked, they want to find those pieces of the past.  But the most brilliant part is that to find these pieces you have to explore their world.  By getting the player hooked they inadvertently force you to explore the entire world that they have created.  This in turn sets you on even more quests and immerses you even further into the world of New Vegas.

The second aspect of design that makes New Vegas unique is its radio station form of soundtrack.  Throughout the wasteland there are radio stations that play many different types of music.  From old rock to jazz to country you can find them all.  These music pieces were all selected to fit the wasteland and your journeys perfectly and they do their job well.  But my favorite part are the talk shows and commercials that run between the songs.  These talk shows discuss recent events in New Vegas.  The news stories can be used to progress the story as well as recap past events.  Using the radio to progress story seamlessly immerses you and helps you to follow the storyline as well as discover more of New Vegas.

Final Proposal

For my final project I want to at least start writing an epic poem much like Dante’s Inferno and the Iliad.  My project would not so much focus on finishing the epic as that could take an infinite amount of time but rather laying the base and hopefully starting the poem itself.

I’ve always been interested in epics since I started looking at poetry.  They always seemed like an impossible feat and therefore I was always too afraid or too timid to try.  So now that an open project with lots of support like this one has presented itself I feel the time has come for a challenge.  By attempting this epic I hope to kind of tear down the fears that I have towards epics and other storyline heavy poems.

The process that I have so far is to create the base for the poem and perhaps start it.  I plan on creating the outline of the events of the poem as well as the characters, setting, etc.  One piece of research I will be doing is popular rhyme schemes in epic poetry.  Right now I don’t have the slightest idea as to the structure of epics.  I will also be researching other popular epics to use elements of their poems to enhance mine.  So far I have the theme of my poem and that is it.  Therefore the brainstorming process will consist primarily of plot development and general creation.

Thoughts Response

I don’t think ideas can really be better than one another.  Rather each idea has a certain situation when it is the perfect solution or is the most poignant.  In brainstorming ideas we are searching for a certain idea that fits what we are trying to accomplish the best.  While some may not be as effective for the scenario at the moment they could be perfect for another time.

If the brainstorm is run correctly and points are not considered in the discussion, that is when I feel originality and creativity flow the best.  When we aren’t worrying about whether that is a good idea or not we can let all our ideas flow out regardless of plausibility.  With no filter eventually we will hit the perfect idea.  While we may have some that are off the mark we aren’t worried because we know we wont be penalized for it and if anything it will only help our participation.

Overall very good post.  Prominent issues were discussed and great questions were asked.  One question of my own is can we include a grade or some form of evaluation without repressing thoughts that may be considered “stupid”?

Monday Essay

You close your eyes and your breathing slows as you fall into sleep.  All of a sudden you are in New York on the sidewalk watching cars pass.  There is a heavy rain and the city is dark.  Colors almost run with the rain, around you all you can see are morose, repressed colors.  Occasionally if you look quickly you can see a flash of something brilliant, the sleeve of a firetruck red, or the bottom diasy yellow blouse.  But those colors are quickly hidden, shoved back under a gun metal rain coat or hidden behind a black umbrella.  You look down and suddenly realize that you aren’t wearing any rain coat and your own clothes are getting drenched.  You turn and sprint for the cover of an awning of a cafe.  As you huddle under the cover and feel the cold seep through your clothes and into your bones, making you shiver.  You look left and right and see others huddling under the awning.  Nobody talks, nobody tries to make eye contact.  Each look is cast down to the dirty pavement, searching the cracks for something, but they don’t know what.  You raise your eyes to search for a warmer shelter.  As you cast your eyes across the countless shades of gray they come to rest on a hotel just across the street.  You take a deep breath and are off, running for the warmth of the hotel.

As you enter you blink and wipe the rain from your eyes.  You look down and realize you are in a suit and completely dry.  You look around as you slowly walk in to the plaza as people walk past like a river.  But unlike the torrent of people outside here in the plaza things are more relaxed.  As the people walk they talk with their companions, giggles and bits of conversation float by.  You continue walking and push through the flow and set yourself down on a couch.  Across from you a man and a woman are talking lively.  Periodically she explodes into giggles and blushes while the man chuckles.  Then they dive back into quiet conversation.  You let the comfort of the couch suck you in and let the warm buzzing wash over you.  You take a deep breath and slowly let it out, as the last of your breath leaves you fall asleep.

You feel that breath chill your neck.  You look around and see yourself surrounded in a snowy, silent forest.  The light snow falling muffles any sound.  You turn around trying to take the scenery in.  You stop as you see something marring the impecable landscape.  A black building is perched on the top of a neighboring hill.  It’s high walls and guard towers make it a modern fortress.  You see guards on patrol watching, keeping out who knows what.  They stare out at the landscape uncaringly, knowing that no one will ever come.  Whatever is hidden behind those walls and the guns guarding the walls is something that nobody wants known.
